3 Signs You Have A Rat Problem In Your Home

Posted on

If you have rodents, you would think you would notice them right away, but they are so sneaky that they can go unnoticed for quite some time until you have a major problem on your hands. Rodents such as rats, although larger in size, can be sneaking in between your walls and getting into your food without you realizing it at all. There are signs you can watch out for that may indicate that you have a rat problem. Read on for a few signs to watch for in your home.

1. Rat Droppings

Rat droppings appear similar to a mouse dropping, just a bit larger. They are going to be an oval, rounded shape, somewhat like a sprinkle, or a grain of rice, but larger. They are only a few centimeters in length but can be spotted easily if you know what you're looking for. You may see these droppings in the corners of your home, in dark, dank areas, or in your pantry, cabinets, or even in food prep or cooking spaces. If you see rat droppings, clean them up immediately to prevent other pests from trying to feed off of these droppings. Other pests such as ants or cockroaches may be attracted to these droppings.

2. Grease and Oil Smears

You could have grease or oil smears along the baseboards of your home, which can be caused by rodent fur. If you see these smears along your walls, or you spot them in other areas of your home, it may have been caused by rats. Try looking for other signs of these pests as well, as roaches can also be leaving these grease and oil smears as well.

3. Damage Caused By Chewing

If you notice that you have damage in your home and it appears to have been chewed, and you don't have a cat or a dog that was causing this damage, it may be caused by rats. Rats will chew through anything to get what it wants, including walls, cabinets, and other spaces in your home, which can leave you with costly damage. If you see this type of damage, look for other signs of rats.

If you have these signs in your home, there's a good chance you have a rodent problem. If you have seen living rats in your home, you need to take action right away. Hire a pest control company to help you get a handle on this pest problem before it becomes an infestation.
